I went in, like you, knowing nothing about it except that it was from the 1920's. I guess because it was kind of a one off by the playwright Treadwell, or at least the only play by her that is revived, I have never heard it mentioned when people talk about Beckett, Pinter, Ionesco. She seems to have charted dramatic territory that they all explored after her. And she herself must have been influenced by Buechner's Wozzeck, I would think. Seeing it now, the play lacks the shock value it must have had in its day. But nevertheless, and especially in this fine production, it makes a strong impression.
