Beautiful last night, and script error

Posted by: broadwaybacker 10:19 am EST 01/15/14

I went last night hoping and expecting to like this show, as I am a big fan of Carole King and her music. And I liked it enough, but I might just as well have gone to a one woman show of Carole King covers, because, as others, including many critics have pointed out, there is just not much substance to the book. The show seems to progress from 60-90 seconds of dialogue to a song to another short segement of dialogue to a song, and on and on. But the performance of Jessica Mueller was outstanding, and I want to also single out Anika Larsen who might well garner a Tony nomination as a featured actress.

There was a mistake in the script. Early in the second act, Carole mentioned that she was moving to LA because she had taken her kids to Disney World there and they loved it. This was 1968, and there was no Disney World. Disneyland is in LA, Disney World in Orlando didn't open until 1971. I was wondering who should have picked this up, and why, after running out of town and then after a lengthy preview run, the mistake was seemingly never corrected. I'm sure that many others must have noticed it.

I was there last night as well. On the way out of the theatre, I overheard several people talking about the Disney World reference, which I had also noticed.

I figured if we all noticed it, it had to have been noticed long before this (and would have been fixed) and had just been a slip up.

She said "Disneyland" when I saw it last week. Must have been a slip.

Ah, good. No one says, "I'm going to Disneyland" after winning the Super Bowl, so a slip sounds right.
