BEAUTIFUL last night -- audience and house staff

Posted by: allineedisthegirl 12:18 pm EST 01/15/14

Last night I saw BEAUTIFUL. I was in Orchestra Row S, dead center (a great seat in that theatre, by the way). To my immediate right were two women who were, from the opening bars, engaged in a competition to be first to recognize each song, so their singing started during the intros, continued at full voice the entire length of each song, and included hand and head choreography and bouncing up and down in their seats. In between songs they continued, each of them calling out plot points as soon as they became obvious (unfortunately, this wasn’t much of a challenge – there won’t be a Tony nomination for Best Book). A man directly in front of them turned around during the opening number and asked them to stop singing. They didn’t stop. A little later (still during the first scene), I asked them to “Please stop making noise. I’m having trouble hearing the show.” Didn’t make a bit of difference.

At intermission I went to an usher and told her that I was having trouble with the people next to me due to their noise and dancing. She told me to talk to an usher in the mezzanine and they’d find me a spot where I could stand. I said thanks and went to the rest room (long line there). When I came out of the men’s room, that usher was waiting for me and told me to go to the usher in the center-right orchestra aisle. They had found an empty seat for me! K-105.

Act II was wonderful. Great seat, appreciative, well-behaved audience.

The house staff at the Sondheim couldn’t have been nicer to me. I’m sending them a thank-you letter today.
