Who says? The night I attended MOTOWN (at a press performance), I was lucky that none of the people in my immediate vicinity were singing along. But I was aware that there were other sections where people were singing throughout the show, and at intermission, I saw some people leaving for that very reason. I assumed they realized it would be a losing battle to complain to the staff in hopes they could try to stop half the audience from making themselves part of the show, plus the departing people probably felt their evening had already been ruined, so they just took off.

As to the positive interpretation of this phenomenon, that at least the people singing along are "engaged," why in the name of all that's holy should one thing lead to another? I'm "engaged" when I go the opera, but if I ever tried to sing along (which I never would), I'd probably be strangled. Is singing along considered remotely "acceptable" at Broadway shows just because they're so over-amplified? Not to me, it ain't.

where they encourage participation from the audience. In my opinion, that's the best number in the entire evening and it is ruined by off-key singers around me.

Really? Wow. Other than sing-along Messiahs, I've never heard of, performed in, or witnessed a performance that encouraged participation. Everyone stands, of course (which is a dumb tradition, but whatever), but that's been the extent in my experience.

Either I've been lucky or you've been unlucky (or both).

i went, i had to stand and everyone (except me) sang. I never went again.
