Really? Wow. Other than sing-along Messiahs, I've never heard of, performed in, or witnessed a performance that encouraged participation. Everyone stands, of course (which is a dumb tradition, but whatever), but that's been the extent in my experience. Either I've been lucky or you've been unlucky (or both).
