I don't know for sure, but I do know that the studio component of Manhattan Center started functioning in the 80s or later. I assume the recording you are speaking of dates back well before that. That would lead me to believe that the recording was either of a performance in what is now the Hammerstein ballroom, or in the separate ballroom upstairs which has been used for recording purposes. That upstairs room is not of a scale that would support a fully mounted opera, but it was used as a very grand recording studio at one time. It was also used for radio broadcasts in the day.
