| The After Midnight folks shared this extended clip of Fantasia singing 'Sunny Side' today. You get about 1 1/2 mins of the song. A shorter version of the song was included in b-roll compilation videos (which were beautifully shot, btw) which have been out for several weeks. Man, I'm bummed I won't be back in NY before the end of Fantasia's run. She's just gorgeous here. | |

| It's funny you mention that! We had front row rush seats when we saw it and by the last number the band plays nearly everyone in my section was leaning on the edges of their seats trying to restrain themselves from jumping up. One good thing about being seated up close is that you literally FEEL the thump of that tremendous band. | |

| I had high expectations for AFTER MIDNIGHT, having enjoyed performances in the past by Fantasia, Cedric Neal, T. Oliver Reid, and Desmond Richardson. Those expectations were exceeded when I saw the show. Why can't I find any information about a cast recording? I hope those wonderful performances can be preserved. For that matter, after hearing Fantasia's take on "Stormy Weather" and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" (in addition to "Sunny Side of the Street"), will someone PLEASE have her record an album of standards? Extra points if the Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars were her backup band. | |

| I would love to see a Fantasia album of standards. She's clearly connected very deeply with this music. Whether or not this makes sense for her pop career right now, I can't say. Very often when artists record "standards" albums, it's because they're a bit, well, irrelevant to the current music scene and exploring the standards is a nice way to revive their careers and reach the PBS pledge drive crowd (no offense if that's your demo, folks). I would hope that if she does explore this further, she works with a producer who doesn't try to smooth out all of her rough edges. I think part of what makes her performance in After Midnight so successful is that it doesn't feel simply like pastiche -- like some slick, overly smooth adult contemporary take on these songs -- it feels raw, passionate and startlingly contemporary. As for a cast recording, who knows if they have the funding? Perhaps they're going to try and do a recording with all of the featured stars later this year? | |

| While I love the clip and the thought of her cut an album of standards, none of these compare to actually seeing the magic she is live in After Midnight! I just thought WOW! when I saw her. | |

| Agreed! I can't get that image of her bathed in a thousand lights at the end of 'Stormy Weather' out of my head! That was certainly a 'wow' moment. Perfect blending of vocalist, band, direction, design (costume and lighting). | |
