I would love to see a Fantasia album of standards. She's clearly connected very deeply with this music. Whether or not this makes sense for her pop career right now, I can't say. Very often when artists record "standards" albums, it's because they're a bit, well, irrelevant to the current music scene and exploring the standards is a nice way to revive their careers and reach the PBS pledge drive crowd (no offense if that's your demo, folks). I would hope that if she does explore this further, she works with a producer who doesn't try to smooth out all of her rough edges. I think part of what makes her performance in After Midnight so successful is that it doesn't feel simply like pastiche -- like some slick, overly smooth adult contemporary take on these songs -- it feels raw, passionate and startlingly contemporary. As for a cast recording, who knows if they have the funding? Perhaps they're going to try and do a recording with all of the featured stars later this year?
