"Let It Go" from Frozen nominated for Oscar

Posted by: Ann 09:26 am EST 01/16/14

I think that's the only theatre-related music nominated.

Such an honor....

...to triumph over such stellar competition as "Alone Yet Not Alone" from the smash hit movie "Alone Yet Not Alone".

Serious, if Lopez wins this Oscar, the EGOT distinction really begins to be a bit diminished, don't you think?

The Best Song category lost all credibility for me in 1977, when Kander and Ebb's "Theme from New York, New York" and "But The World Goes Round" were not even nominated.

The winner that year was "You Light Up My Life." I was just humming it the other...well, I'm sure I've hummed it at one point in time.

Whether the movie it came from is a "smash hit" has never been -- nor should it be -- relevant to the "credibility" of the category.

Nearly every major category at the Oscars has bad winners and bad oversights, though, so it's not that fair to pick on Best Song.

The song doesn't deserve to win... and Lopez certainly is nowhere near deserving of being on that short list... besides the fact that he hasn't won the EGT this year.

By "win the EGOT this year," I don't think the poster meant to say Lopez would be winning all 4 awards in the same year. This isn't necessary for "EGOT." I think the poster meant that Lopez would be winning the 4th one, so that he would now have the EGOT "title."

If anything, my objection with the phrasing is the idea of "winning" the EGOT. I guess one can be an EGOT winner, in the sense that EGOT is an abbreviation for all four awards. And certainly the phrase "win the EGOT" allows for this (win the Emmy Grammy Oscar Tony). But "win the EGOT" kind of makes it sound like the EGOT itself is a thing, and it isn't. Meaning, EGOT (as a single object, not an abbreviation) is not itself something you win- it isn't an award or a prize. (Well, there's Tracy Jordan's "EGOT" Medal on 30 Rock.)

There's also the fact that Lopez's Emmy is a Daytime Emmy- Whoopi Goldberg has this as well, so some might argue this isn't the same as winning a Primetime Emmy award.

EGOT isn't a same year thing. There isn't a single EGOT winner who got all of those awards in the same year. The shortest amount of time it took anyone was 16 years for Rita Moreno (7 years, if you count Barbra Streisand's non-competitive Tony award). The longest amount of time is 45 years for Helen Hayes.

That said, if Lopez wins an Oscar, he will become, by a wide margin, the EGOT winner with the shortest amount of time to get all four awards (10 years).

He won his first Tony back in 2004, so from that perspective, it would have "taken him" 10 years to win.

But in fact, Lopez would actually have won all 4 awards in a window of 3-4 years- he won a Daytime Emmy in 2010, and a Tony and Grammy since then. And even counting it this way (from smallest window, not first award), no other EGOT comes close.

Of course, this is IF he wins the Academy award.

I'm sorry that it will sound rude or mean, but this is all the more reason I hope he does not win the Oscar this year. He is a very talented guy, but he isn't some prodigy so talented he's deserving of this rare distinction of not only the EGOT but having done it so quickly. He is very lucky he's been able to collaborate with the people he has.

Um, it just sounds weird.

Everyone here knows that these awards, and especially these fan-invented 'grand slam' combinations, are never an accurate reflection of artistic achievement.

A complaint that a given award or combination is especially disproportionate only emphasizes that we're silly to take them at all seriously.

period.

I am not debating whether or not he will get it if he gets the oscar. I am voicing my opinion that the song does not deserve the oscar, and he does not deserve an EGOT at this point in his career (and not to mention, as some have, that his Emmy is a Daytime Emmy which isn't quite the same level of competition).

period.

I hope the Lopez duo wins. Bono has admitted for over ten years now that he writes movie songs because he wants an Oscar, and he campaigned obnoxiously for that snoozefest he wrote for Gangs of New York. I'd love to see him lose again. And yes, I know how bitchy that sounds but few get under my skin more than Bono.

Winning over Bono would be one reason I'd root for "Let It Go"... but I'm trying to judge based on the song.

Luckily for Bobby, your opinion won't determine if he deserves the Oscar ... unless you're an Academy voter. ;)

By the way, it was just announced that he and Kristen won the Critics Choice Award for Best Song for ''Let It Go.''

That's in addition to their movie, ''Frozen,'' winning the Critics Choice prize for Best Animated Film earlier.

Well... it lost the Golden Globe.

I'm not saying the movie isn't wonderful, and that the score isn't decent.

But I do not think the Critics Choice Awards have anything to do with the Oscars nor are they any indication of anything.

And Frozen is not "their" movie... it's the movie for which they wrote the songs.

And I think everyone knows Frozen will win just about every "Best Animated Film" category this year because it's good and there is nothing else good enough to beat it, at least not from America.

Actually, among the major prizes, the Critics Choice Awards have often had the best record of predicting the Oscars.

And what kind of game are you playing? The Lopezes wrote the songs for it; of course, ''Frozen'' is their movie. By your line of reasoning, ''Oklahoma!'' isn't Rodgers & Hammerstein's musical; it's just a show for which they wrote the songs?

''I'm not saying the movie isn't wonderful.'' Actually, I think you are. You seem set on diminishing its achievements and the Lopezes' work. Hey, if ''Frozen'' leaves you cold, that's your opinion and you're welcome to it.

But if ''Frozen'' should win just about every ''Best Animated Film'' award, it will be because the majority of voters in that organization perceived it to be the best of the year's selections. That's how awards work. You compare it to what else is competing now; it's not competing with 1991's ''Beauty and the Beast.'' And if ''Frozen'' lost just about every Animated Film award, I'd bet that you'd point out that's proof that ''Frozen'' isn't really that good.

Winning an Oscar is winning an Oscar, and no matter what season or what the competition is, it's always an honor.

I doubt it. I think U2 has the win pretty much in the bag for the Mandela song. But then again, Bono is a Broadway writer too. Haha.

For Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts. But Tracy Letts misses the cut for Best Adapted Screenplay.

And ''Saving Mr. Banks,'' about the making of ''Mary Poppins,'' is nearly shut out, except for Thomas Newman's score.

He got the WGA nomination, but probably only because John Ridley and "12 Years a Slave..." was ineligible, based on a signatory issue with the production company.
