There are only a handful of people that can pull this off. Hugh and NPH are the two "names".

However, if this was done at a non-profit, then the best choice hands down is Brian D'arcy James.

Love "Barnum". Was in a production many years ago (1987)...had a blast! Would love to see a revival...especially since I missed the original with Jim Dale. Great Cy Coleman score!

Why would a non-profit do this show? It isn't a great show... it's decent. But I feel like the only major non-profit that would do it would be Roundabout, and they would of course want to cast a star.

James is an interesting choice. Not sure if he has the charisma needed for this role nor am I sure he has the agility to walk a tightrope. However, NPH has the right energy. Still, this role has Hugh written all over it.

As for the post that says Hugh isn't keen on revivals. I seem to recall it was a revival that put him on the map - OKLAHOMA!

James is one of the most versatile actors out there. As far as charisma, how about Shrek or Wild Party? Also, his voice for these songs would be perfection.

As far as walking a tightrope, I don't believe that it's "written" into the script is it? I'm sure they would figure something out.

I didn't mean to imply that James wasn't extremely talented or charismatic but I'm not sure he commands the stage in the same way that Hugh Jackman or Jim Dale do. Whereas they are more "showman", James, to me, comes from a deeper, more cerebral place. That is not bad - in fact, it's something to be admired. But I don't quite seem him in such a role that totally revolves around the kinetic brilliance of the famous "Prince of Humbug" in the same way that others such as say, Michael Crawford who also made an impact in the role.

And actually, the tightrope bit IS an essential part of the show. I can't imagine the show working as well without it.
