LES MIZ in Toronto

Was in Toronto this week and decided to see the new production of LES MIZ. I like the show and respect what is great about it, but I've only seen it on stage once, many years ago. I did not see Ramin Karimloo, the Valjean who got all the raves, sadly it was his night off. I saw his alternate, Aaron Walpole, a more hefty physical presence than I've seen do the role before. He was very good, but got a little mushy mouthed on occasion. He did deliver the most beautiful, powerful version of "Bring Him Home" that I've ever heard. Everyone around me was sobbing (including me). Absolutely stunning. The cast was solid all around, including a "Canadian Idol" runner-up as Eponine, whose performance I liked a lot. This production used a lot of projections (many of the backgrounds based on actual paintings by Victor Hugo himself) and I guess had all new staging. No turntable. Big extended set off which took over the box seats closest to the stage (was that part of the original design?). Overall, it was good to get the images of the movie out of my head and revel in some pretty wonderful theatrics. When that show works, it really works.
