I was struck by Brantley's problem with the set, since I thought it was brilliant, evocative, and a significant part of the play's success!

Just a footnote: the automation for "Es Devlin’s revolving, scene-stealing set, which portrays a juggernaut of doom", as Brantley put it, failed on opening night, very early in the show. The show was nearly cancelled, but roughly a dozen stagehands who were attending came backstage, shucked their tuxes and used good old manpower to move the cube for the rest of the show.

Set failure opening night at Machinal

I touched on this downthread, but here's an article about it.

The motor that drove the set broke very early in the play. The show was almost cancelled, but stagehands and set builders in the audience (and from nearby theaters) came backstage to try to fix it. Failing that, they ended up being the manpower to move the set for that performance.

The audience, which had been given free rein at the now-open bar during the delay, gave the volunteers a standing ovation at the curtain call.

Reading the review earlier this morning I didn't come away thinking he had a problem with the set. If I recall correctly he thought that it reflected the powerful forces of alienation that are crushing The Young Woman. He does call it "scene stealing" but also says its not overwhelming, or words to that effect. I saw it last week and thought both the set and Rebecca Hall were superb.
