The Jan. 17 performance of Bertolt Brecht's farce A Man's A Man has been canceled due to a cast member's injury.

Bill Buell, who plays Jeraiah Jip, sustained a fractured ankle while off-stage early in the first act of the Jan. 16 performance. The injury was due to a mechanical malfunction involving a ballast weight for a garage door, which is part of the show’s set design.

There is no understudy for the role, and the remainder of the Jan. 16 performance was canceled as well as the Jan. 17 performance. CSC hopes to resume performances Jan. 18.

I sure hope they get an understudy, because I have no clue how someone can go on with a fractured ankle.

He could act from a chair (that's been done a couple of times in the past). I thought Off-Broadway didn't have understudies until after opening. Maybe for an emergency?

The contract CSC is a party to does not ever require understudies, but no contract prohibits understudies at any time. Under the Off-B contract, understudies are required either 2 weeks after the first performance for open runs or (in the case of a limited run) after the sixth week of performance.

I know I've seen several off broadway production over the years where a last minute substitute was on book during the performance, most recently, it was Hetienne Park at a performance of stop. reset at Signature. She wasn't listed as an understudy & they made an announcement that she stepped in last minute for a cast member who had a family emergency that took her out of town. That performance was definitely weeks after opening night.
