A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC in Brooklyn could be interesting

Posted by: Revned 02:45 pm EST 01/17/14

Is anybody planning to check out A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, opening next weekend at The Gallery Players in Park Slope? It looks like a very interesting cast; the Desiree and the Madame Armfeldt both have Broadway credits. That was one of the first theatres to do YANK; they do some great shows.

I wish them well but I'm not interested in seeing another scaled down, production. I want to see one like the original with full orchestrations and beautiful production values. Don't see it happening anytime soon so I'll just keep my memories (saw it twice during the original run). Still kicking myself for not seeing the original Pacific Overtures.

There was a wonderful full-scale production by Michigan Opera Theatre a few years back. I wonder, does ALNM get much opera house play? I know there have been numerous Candides and Sweeneys performed by opera companies. Does anyone know if ALNM gets many opera house productions? I think opera houses might be the venue to see regular, lush productions of great Broadway musical scores.

Yes, saw it at LA Opera

...back in the summer of 2004. I wish they'd revive it. It was essentially a transfer of the NY City Opera production. The LA Opera very smartly cast it with all musical theatre actors rather than with opera singers. I only saw it once, but wish I'd had a chance to go back. It remains one of the most enchanting nights I've spent in the theatre. Such a treat to hear that glorious score played by a 40-piece orchestra. And, I mean, this was the cast. I'd argue that no stronger ensemble has been cast in Night Music since the original production:

Desiree Armfeldt - Judith Ivey
Fredrik Egerman - Victor Garber
Anne Egerman - Laura Benanti
Fredrika Armfeldt - Kristen Bell
Madame Armfeldt - Zoe Caldwell
Henrik Egerman - Danny Gurwin
Petra - Jessica Boevers
Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm - Marc Kudisch
Countess Charlotte Malcolm - Michelle Pawk

Damn, that is a great cast. And Caldwell did it at Ravinia, too. That was a wonderful concert (musically it was majestic; Hearn and LuPone sang it beautifully and acted it well, but neither would be my choice for a full production. Sounded glorious with the Chi Symph and amazing singers, though). Similar to you, it was one of the finer nights I've spent at the (amphi)theatre.

Anyone know if Gallery is using a pre-existing orchestral reduction (I think Tunick did one) or are they doing something new?

"Gin & Tunick" could make for a great cabaret act, provided you could afford the orchestra.

with his big band, the Broadway Moonlighters. If his guest were Ginnifer Goodwin, it could be: Ginn & Tunick. ;)
