Noises Off! Casting Ideas

Posted by: FriendofDorothy 11:09 pm EST 01/17/14

Does anyone have any good thoughts about who should be cast in the NO! revival? It should be noted that the last revival went heavy on "name" casting (at least in the theatre world), with LuPone, Gallagher, Easton, Prince and Hibbert (and of course TR Night and Katie Finneran would become names). I suspect that a limited run at the Roundabout will not follow the same path, and would probably seek stars for Dotty & Lloyd only, to stay on budget. Suggestions?

….like Imelda Staunton, who was wonderfully funny in both ENTERTAINING MR. SLOANE and SWEENEY TODD. I think she'd be a great Dotty.

How about Roger Rees as Lloyd?

Michael Cumpsty as Freddie?

Jim Norton as Selsdon?

Are either of the Gummer girls funny? I could see either of them looking good as Brook.

And wouldn't Deborah Rush now be kind of perfect for Belinda?

And maybe Andrew Rannells as Gary LeJeune? Never heard him do an English accent, but he is very funny and very cute. And young enough to make the joke of his name work. (And he and Imelda would be a funny romantic couple with the height difference.)

Andrea Martin as Dottie (Allison Janney would also be a pick) and Jeff Daniels as Lloyd.

Also Helene Yorke as Brooke, as she might be ready to leave Bullets Over Broadway by then. Or Jenni Barber.

Would love to see Harriet Harris as Dotty. She garnered raves when she played the role in 2009 at Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey.

That's great. I hadn't thought of her. In a way, Dotty is easier to cast because you need a good ham, whereas Lloyd is essentially a straight man (IIRC, it has been a dozen years since I saw it). I think Michelle Pawk might be a good Dotty, too.

The other 2 unknowns in the cast also did quite well for themselves. Robin Weigert was nominated for an Emmy for her part in Deadwood. Thomas McCarthy has had more success behind the scenes, writing and directing The Station Agent (Peter Dinklage's breakout role) and The Visitor (for which Richard Jenkins was Oscar-nominated), as well as co-writing the screenplay for Up.

I think Roundabout will have a lot of actors familiar to us, even if they aren't known to the general public. I think Laura Benanti would be incredible as Brooke.

Isn't Benanti a bit too old for Brooke? I'd love to see her as Belinda though.

And don't forget T. R. Knight who played Tim Allgood who did pretty good for himself too.
