Need Recommendations re: Hotel in Theatre Area

Posted by: TragedyComedy555 (tragedycomedy555@yahoo.com) 12:06 am EST 01/18/14

Friends are coming over towards end of April, beginning May to see The Cripple of Inishmaan.

Could anyone recommend hotels in the theatre district.

The lowest priced hotels that I found were The Hotel Carter (2 stars), Hotel St. James (3.5 stars), and the Milford Plaza (3.5 stars).

I appreciate any advice. Please feel free to email me. Thank you.

Stay FAR AWAY from the Hotel Carter. I would advise using Hotwire. You won't know the hotel until you've booked it, but you can limit your search to Times Square and Midtown West. You're more than likely to get better hotels at lower prices than you've been quoted.

I'm amazed that the Hotel Carter wasn't completely renovated and turned into an upscale hotel years ago. It's SO CLOSE to Times Square, my mind boggles at the rates they could get if the gave the face a thorough renovation (and cleaning).

Yes, for some time that block of 43rd Street was the one really bad block left in the area, and there is still that SRO (or whatever it is) across the street from the Carter. But the block is definitely improving overall, and there's that new Weston just steps away. And of course, if the Carter were renovated, that would only help bring up the block faster.

... is still kind of an amazing place to live. TEENY TEENY TEENY tiny apartments. But many are zoned for broke performing arts professionals, and if you're an actor who's just starting out, it's kinda ridiculous to pay such a low rent while enjoying such an amazing location.

Many of the other apartments are earmarked for those living with HIV. I'm just glad the city does it.

I just had a rotten experience of a bag stolen from my room at the Paramount. The room rate was acceptable and the location terrific but I won't stay here again, even though I realize it could happen anywhere.

There's a Hilton Garden Inn on W 54th opening later this month and Travelzoo was offering rooms with one king for $159 or two doubles for $189 through May 31.

It's a great rate for that time of year so some dates are no longer available but check the Hilton website for the HGI New York/Central Park South-Midtown West location. You have to enter 2669220 in the Corporate account box to get the special rate.

I'm not sure how much longer this special will be available so if they like this hotel and it's available when they need it, they should book as soon as possible. It can be cancelled up to the day before so there's nothing to lose.

Hotels are pretty high priced at that time. I'm pretty sure the Milford Plaza has been remodeled and you can't beat the location for theatregoing.

I would suggest using one of the aggregate sites (Kayak, Trivago, Quikbook, DealAngel) and put in your limits: location (if that is a limit), price, star-level, etc. Check the traveler review values on the results (if the site doesn't have them, use TripAdvisor - don't take an individual review as gospel, but look through and see what kinds of things are problems for more than one person).

Unless there is a physical problem walking, it's not necessary to stay in the Theatre District/Times Square: Midtown East and the Financial District are particularly cheaper on the weekends. In addition to what's been offered, look outside Manhattan: Long Island City, New Jersey, and Brooklyn, especially with more than one person travelling together).

I've stayed in more than 30 hotels, in many price levels, all over Manhattan, but each traveler's requirements are going to be different. In May, it' probably a good deal in the Theatre District to be under $250/night for a good hotel.

There's no reason to feel confined by the theater district, unless you really can't imagine getting on the subway. Particularly if you're flying in, getting a hotel in Long Island City will save you money and make it easier to get to & from the airport. And a lot of the chain hotels in LIC are brand new.

I have stayed at the St. James and it was fine. No frills, but clean rooms and very nice location just a few blocks from Times Sq.
I don't stay in the city anymore as the prices are ridiculous. One night's room tax alone is almost the equivalent to a hotel room in Stamford CT, which is where I stay. Rooms are about $100 a night and Stamford is right on the Metro North line. In NY City, just the taxes on the room for one night can be $60!

I have never stayed there, but a friend and I checked out the Yotel, which is in the same building as the Signature Theater on West 42nd Street. It's a "pod" hotel, and brand new. Take a look in Tripadvisor and see what you think!

I've stayed at the Yotel and quite liked it. Think of the room as a very well put-together cruise ship cabin -- which is to say, everything is tiny, but the use of space is very good.

I note that I was travelling solo, and just for a few days. If you're cramming more people in the room (with a lot more stuff), it may get cramped.

Also, there is a downside to being a pod hotel, which is that it is considered hip (to some degree) and it is therefore very popular. The result is that its prices go up -- to the point where you can sometimes get a larger room someplace else for a better price.

Stay away from the Carter Hotel. Although it's under new management and they are in the process of renovating some rooms, there's no guarantee yours would be renovated, and there are still some unwelcome types roaming the halls.

EXACTLY. It earned the dubious distinction of the worst hotel in the country (world?) for consecutive years recently.

I've stayed at the Mayfair, on 49th St. right next to the Eugene O'Neill Theater, and had good experiences. It's "European" (i.e., small rooms and slightly shabby) but comfortable and not too expensive.

I've stayed there several times, though it's been a while, and I agree with you. At least when I've looked, the Mayfair doesn't always show up on the large hotel search sites, and their online form used to not be automated, but they are worth a call.

I've been hoping to hear the rooms have been remodeled (from the Delft wallpaper) but, when I stayed there, there were no problems and their front desk staff were some of the friendliest I've encountered in the city.
