I have stayed at the St. James and it was fine. No frills, but clean rooms and very nice location just a few blocks from Times Sq. I don't stay in the city anymore as the prices are ridiculous. One night's room tax alone is almost the equivalent to a hotel room in Stamford CT, which is where I stay. Rooms are about $100 a night and Stamford is right on the Metro North line. In NY City, just the taxes on the room for one night can be $60!
