Stay away from the Carter Hotel. Although it's under new management and they are in the process of renovating some rooms, there's no guarantee yours would be renovated, and there are still some unwelcome types roaming the halls.

EXACTLY. It earned the dubious distinction of the worst hotel in the country (world?) for consecutive years recently.

I've stayed at the Mayfair, on 49th St. right next to the Eugene O'Neill Theater, and had good experiences. It's "European" (i.e., small rooms and slightly shabby) but comfortable and not too expensive.

I've stayed there several times, though it's been a while, and I agree with you. At least when I've looked, the Mayfair doesn't always show up on the large hotel search sites, and their online form used to not be automated, but they are worth a call.

I've been hoping to hear the rooms have been remodeled (from the Delft wallpaper) but, when I stayed there, there were no problems and their front desk staff were some of the friendliest I've encountered in the city.
