Hotels are pretty high priced at that time. I'm pretty sure the Milford Plaza has been remodeled and you can't beat the location for theatregoing.

I would suggest using one of the aggregate sites (Kayak, Trivago, Quikbook, DealAngel) and put in your limits: location (if that is a limit), price, star-level, etc. Check the traveler review values on the results (if the site doesn't have them, use TripAdvisor - don't take an individual review as gospel, but look through and see what kinds of things are problems for more than one person).

Unless there is a physical problem walking, it's not necessary to stay in the Theatre District/Times Square: Midtown East and the Financial District are particularly cheaper on the weekends. In addition to what's been offered, look outside Manhattan: Long Island City, New Jersey, and Brooklyn, especially with more than one person travelling together).

I've stayed in more than 30 hotels, in many price levels, all over Manhattan, but each traveler's requirements are going to be different. In May, it' probably a good deal in the Theatre District to be under $250/night for a good hotel.
