The balcony is not something "good things" would be said about, but as long as you understand that it is WAY up there, and that you may have to lean forward to see the apron from any seat (and move around depending on what the person in front of you is doing), the mezz is not worth twice the price. But for a lot of folks it is. If you are going to kvetch, or are taking someone who will, spend the money. Otherwise save it. Also, it would be nice to know if there is going to be much staging happening in the orchestra, because you'll see none of it.

I think it's one of the worst Balconies on Broadway! And if you don't care for heights it's even worse with a fairly drastic rake. Not sure if they still have a separate entrance for the balcony or if they fixed that with the renovation.

Belasco 2nd Balcony -- Anyone sit up there recently?

Since the renovation, the separate entrance situation has been corrected
-- the 2nd balcony is now accessible via the staircase that is inside the theater. I walked up there recently to check it out -- it looks rather nice with new, modern washrooms and (of course) all new seating -- I didn't notice any drastic rake -- the view seemed somewhat improved, but then I wasn't actually sitting up there for the performance.

I agree that prior to the renovation, the Belasco's 2nd balcony was the worst in any Broadway theater, especially for seeing a musical. Has anyone on the board actually sat up there for a performance recently? If so, is there any improvement since the renovation?

When I decided to see the Shakespeares again, I sat up there. It is what it is. The renovation made everything new but it did not magically transport the balcony to the mezzanine level so you are still watching the show from "on high." The rake doesn't bother me, but like the cheap seats in many venues, some people don't like that.

I only sat up there once -- in May, 2001 -- the show was Follies, a Sat. night performance (the orchestra and mezzanine were totally sold-out). It was a very bad experience, impossible to appreciate the choreography properly. I haven't sat up there since but back in 2012 when I was seeing End of the Rainbow (in the orchestra) I walked up there to look around -- nice washrooms anyway and improved decor.

I don't mind the 2nd balcony at the Shubert, Cort, and Longacre, but the 2nd balconies at most of the other Broadway theaters seem a lot more distant from the stage.

Saw both Shakespeares from up there. RICHARD III--center Row B aisle. TWELFTH NIGHT--center Row A aisle. The Row B seat was ideal. Great stage view and no need to lean forward at all. The Row A seat was worse, because the railing does cut off the stage apron as ryhog mentioned a few posts ago. For $27 I'm not complaining. Not sure If HEDWIG is charging $70 or so for balcony though (I haven't looked at the prices, just guessing) I would take my chances waiting for discounts of TKTS/TDF.

Agreed that the balcony is now quite gorgeous, and the Belasco overall is one of--if not the--most beautiful theatre currently operating on Broadway.

Thanks for your comments. I agree that it definitely is beautiful up there. At some point I will probably venture up there for a play (when economics dictate that I need to), but it will not be for a musical.

I had a friend who sat up there for "Passing Strange" (on one of those Friday nights when the show, which often closed off the balcony altogether, was completely sold out), and she said that she sometimes had trouble hearing. Since "Hedwig" is similarly a rock musical, I'd hold off on buying up there until we know how the sound works.

alas the separate entrance is gone. I'm not sure why that's a "fix" since the main difference is that it takes a lot longer to get out at the end of the show.

After being up there for Twelfth Night, I didn't want to risk it again!

The first (and last) time I went to Hedwig I spent the 2nd act reading on a stairwell in the lobby! :-) I had never heard of them.
