"Dear World" poster on "Rhoda"

Posted by: bobby2 07:57 pm EST 01/20/14

I'm watching Rhoda reruns on MeTV and have noticed she has a poster for Angela Lansbury in "Dear World" hanging in her apartment. Why? Was there some connection between the show and some staff member of Rhoda or Valerie Harper herself?

Seems like an odd random choice since it is the only theatre poster she has and it isn't even a current one since Rhoda was done nearly 10 years after Dear World flopped.

Curious why Rhoda Morgenstern would be attached to that show. (especially since she lived in Minneapolis when it opened!)

"Rhoda ...has a poster for "Dear World" hanging in her apartment. "

While it's been a while since I've seen "Rhoda," I remember puzzling over the fact that she had not one, but TWO of those posters hanging in her abode.

Perhaps she just loved the Faye Gage artwork and purchased them in 1970 (as I did mine) at Triton Gallery for $10!

Gee, here's a stretch, Valerie Harper was a gypsy living in New York and dancing on Broadway at the time of "Dear World" and was a big fan of Lansbury or the show or both. Maybe she supplied it.

Peter Filichia has mentioned that in a couple of his columns. In his recent blog from Masterworks he speculates with tongue in cheek: I’d like to think that Rhoda had to have it after she’d heard the show’s original cast album.

As a aside, the fabulous Marliyn Sokol was almost cast as Rhoda, but was deemed "too Jewish."

Blair also had a Follies poster on the wall of her Langley College dorm room on The Facts of Life. I always assumed it was set dressers having fun and putting things in for their friends to spot.

Also, in the real world people sometimes hang posters as artwork, not because they have any particular connection to what the poster is advertising.

So true. One of my friends had a litho of Piaf under a streetlight in Paris. He had no idea of who she was until I told him.
