April theater binge: What "musts"?

Posted by: Logan69 10:15 pm EST 01/20/14

I'll see about 7 shows and would like to nail down 5 of them before I get there, leaving a couple of open dates for wild cards. Only definite right now is ACT I. Suggestions for other must-see from this list? Many will still be in previews:

Bridges of Madison County, All the Way, Mothers & Sons, Bullets over Broadway, Threepenny Opera*, Cabaret, Of Mice & Men, Hedwig & Angry Inch, Cripple of Inishmaan, & The City of Conversation.* [*Off-Broadway]

All of your comments were helpful and gave me food for thought. Dramedy, Rocky is not remotely on my radar. Cabaret will probably be a tough decision, as I've see it a zillion times, including this production with this male lead. But I do like it. By mid-April only a few of these shows will have opened. For now, I'm still flying high on fumes from Twelfth Night, Glass Menagerie, and Buyer & Cellar from November.

So rocky isn't on anyone's radar

I find that interesting that every other show opening this spring has been mentioned in this thread.

Actually, a bunch of other shows haven't been mentioned (If/Then, Aladdin, Les Mis, Velocity of Autumn, Casa Valentina), although I don't think any of them, with the possible exception of If/Then, is likely to become a "must see."

Rocky is on my radar. I bought my tickets as soon as a discount became available and got great seats by calling Telecharge directly.

I never saw that discount

I don't think it ever showed up on playbill or broadwaybox. I ended up buying a good single center orch for regular piece.

I received an e-mail from Telecharge and just recently I've gotten a mailer.

I received a mailer containing a discount code last week, but I'm not planning on seeing Rocky.

You're smart to nail down five shows. April will be crazy busy, with lots of shows opening in time for Tony eligibility.

From your list, I am seeing Bridges, Cabaret, Hedwig and Cripple of Inishmaan. I would like to see Bullets, but I am waiting to see if any deals emerge (and they might not). All the Way is also on my wish list, but I think because it's a straight play, it may end up on TKTS (despite the star-studded cast). I also have tickets to Violet.

I haven't seen Bridges yet, but if advance word is any indication, Beautiful might be a better choice if you're a Carole King fan (I love the show). Have fun!

I simply adored `Gentleman's Guide,' but it might come through in pretty representative form on tour, but this cast is pretty wonderful.

Sports fan? Bronx Bombers.
Spoiler: Not high art by any stretch.

How about The Realistic Joneses with Michael C. Hall, Toni Collette, Marisa Tomei and Tracy Letts?

I saw Cripple when it was revived Off-Broadway a few years ago and thought it was an excellent play (and very well-done). Obviously, each production is different, but I imagine Radcliffe is capable of doing a fine job with the role.

I love the play and thought the Atlantic production was wonderful. I'm sorry to say that having seen the production with Radcliffe in the West End it's not a must see. He is solid, as is the entire production. But it pales in comparison to the original NY production and its more recent revival.

Doesn't begin until apr 12...you better be quick, Radcliffe got spectacular London reviews. I had a hard time getting tickets that weren't under the balcony/mezzanine.

The other show that might be a tough ticket is A Raisin in the Sun with Denzel Washington (although we have no idea whether it's any good).

Everyone's must see list is different. Most on your list, I would wait to hear more about, but I would add Violet without hearing a thing.

Thanks for the Violet suggestion, Ann. I'm not a big Sutton Foster fan, but after reading the Violet reviews, I've added it.
