I don't think that was the point, Mike. A good size Broadway house seats 1000. Not all of them sell out those theaters (obviously). My point really addresses the actual number of people going to see Cinderella each week, which seems to be an impressive number. Most weeks it's 10,000 or more.

I guess I was trying to point out, perhaps in an inarticulate way, the potential problems in playing in a theater comparable to the Broadway in capacity.

there was nothing inarticulate about it at all. it is a point thats easy to miss even looking at the chart. in fact it caught my eye that CINDERELLA wasn't doing as well as i felt it should be doing. you made me realize it's doing better than it looks like.

i don't think CINDERELLA falls into this category at all but the wrong theater can do real damage to a production.

the st james - a theater i love - seems to get stuck frequently with things that make it feel cavernous.

i wish AFTER MIDNIGHT was doing the kind of business it deserves.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Getting the right size theatre is a combination of luck (that the right size is available when you are ready) and guesswork (where will you hit the sweet spot between revenue and demand). As Dramedy is fond of pointing out, the premium ticket overlay can mess with this mightily.

I also think it's easy to look for a scapegoat when you don't like a show's fortunes.

I've always wondered why they picked the Broadway, a theatre that is surprisingly cavernous (particularly if you're seated upstairs). I don't know if this had to do with lack of other options, but it has seemed from the start that the producers thought they had a bigger event on their hands than they actually did. If they were in the Neil Simon or the Stephen Sondheim, they would look more outwardly successful, considering that they have consistently attracted a strong, but not huge, audience.

Of course, we are also getting into one of those periods where a lot of long-running shows are taking up the big and even medium sized musical houses, not leaving many options.
