Aurora Theatre Company continues its 22nd season with the Bay Area Premiere of Johnna Adams’ (2011 Princess Grace Award recipient, finalist for the 2012 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize) incendiary new play GIDION’S KNOT. A parent/teacher conference begins with a concerned mother wanting answers as to why her son was suspended from his 5th grade class. Was he a bully? A victim? A protector? Their discussion develops into a dramatically charged, volatile exploration of personal responsibility, freedom of expression, the failure of our school system, bullying, and blame.Called “heart-stopping” by Washingtonian Magazine, this provocative exploration of culpability raises profound questions about parenting, maternal loyalty, and who is ultimately responsible for the actions of our children. Jon Tracy (The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity) returns to Aurora Theatre Company to helm GIDION’S KNOT, featuring Jamie Jones (Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance) and Stacy Ross (Wilder Times). For mature audiences.GIDION’S KNOT will be the fully-staged anchor production in this season’s Global Age Project, an Aurora Theatre Company initiative that encourages playwrights and directors to explore life in the 21st century and beyond. In addition, several new plays dealing with global age concerns will be chosen from an international pool of playwrights and presented in a series of developmental readings during the run of GIDION’S KNOT. A milestone of 20th century musical theater, The Threepenny Opera (Die Dreigroschenoper) rolls on unstoppably into the 21st with absolute relevance in today’s world. In their opera “by and for beggars,” composer Kurt Weill (1900–1950) and playwright Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956) created a trailblazing musical spectacle of fierce social and political critique, where the ‘haves’ clash with the ‘have-nots’ with its haunting jazz score by Kurt Weill, acid harmonies and biting lyrics. This musical saga of the villainous but irresistible Mack the Knife and his marauding band of thieves is a revolutionary musical theatre inspiring such hits as Cabaret (at The Stage in 2011 for an extended run) and Urinetown, The Musical (at The Stage in 2006 for an extended run). DIABLO THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS THE BELOVED ROMANTIC MUSICAL COMEDY GUYS AND DOLLS One of Broadway’s best musicals, Guys and Dolls comes to Walnut Creek for the Arts in Diablo Theatre Company’s exuberant production that captures the romance and humor of Damon Runyon’s Depression-era urban fables about fancy-talking gamblers and the “dolls” who love them. The Tony Award-winning show, running February 7 through March 1, features a book by Abe Burrows and music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, who penned such immortal tunes as “Luck Be A Lady,” “Adelaide’s Lament” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.” Premiering on Broadway in 1950, Guys and Dolls was inspired by Runyon, a sportswriter and newspaperman whose New York-based tall tales are famously filled with colorful tough-guy characters and a poetic and distinctly American slang. There are 16 performances of Guys and Dolls at the Lesher Center, 1601 Civic Drive, Walnut Creek. For tickets, call 925-943-SHOW (7469) or visit www.lesherartscenter.org or www.diablotheatre.org. Claybourne Park playwright Bruce Norris offers another scathing satire of the upper class, in this painfully hysterical examination of denial and its consequences. Something’s been gnawing at the avocados in Clay and Kelly’s kitchen. This upper middle class American couple will go to any lengths to protect their children from whatever creature has invaded their domestic bliss, but the sense of invasion will not stop. As the story is gradually unfolded to their visitor, a Muslim cab driver, his relationship to the events becomes increasingly clear, as does the emptiness of the family’s supposed benevolence and sensitivity. DUNCAN SHEIK (GRAMMY® and 2x Tony Award winner, composer of Spring Awakening) Sat, Feb 8, 8 & 10pm 8pm $29 adv, $34 door 10pm $21 adv, $26 door
After breaking through in the late ‘90s with his Top 20 single “Barely Breathing,” Duncan Sheik spent much of the subsequent decade taking a breather from the usual rock singer/songwriter rituals. His focus was on albums that broke with pop music conventions and, additionally, theatrical musicals like Spring Awakening, the Broadway sensation that won him two Tony Awards and a GRAMMY®. As he explains this lengthy diversion now: “After a while you get boring to everyone else, but you get really bored with yourself. There was a moment where I was much more interested in these kind of longer narrative arcs, and being able to sing from the perspective of somebody else’s persona, as opposed to Duncan Sheik’s.”
