Two one person plays, St. Nicholas and The Good Thief, by the award-winning Irish playwright Conor McPherson, will be performed by former San Francisco based award winning actor Michael McGee and directed by former Bay Area based stage, film, TV actor/director Scott Paulin, (Berkeley Rep / Magic Theatre and the film The Right Stuff ). The two McPherson plays will be performed over one weekend at The Shelton Theatre, 533 Sutter St. in San Francisco, beginning with St. Nicholas, Fri. Feb. 14 at 8pm, followed by The Good Thief on Sat. Feb 15 at 8pm, ending with St. Nicholas again on Sun. Feb 16 at 2 pm. St. Nicholas, the more recently written of the two, is the humorous and romantic story of a pub carousing theatre critic who falls in love with a young actress …then starts working for vampires. The Good Thief is the whirlwind tale of a hard-drinking petty thug from the slums of Dublin whose obsession with the wrong woman nearly gets him killed. Call it Dublin Noir, edgy and fast-paced, bullet-riddled, rain-soaked, darkly romantic, sardonically funny, and in the end, deeply moving. Both of these productions have had runs in Los Angeles receiving rave reviews from LA press including critic’s pick from the LA Times. St Nicholas was nominated Best Solo Performance by The LA Weekly theatre awards. Both shows also played in Venice CA at The Del Monte Speakeasy and in Minneapolis most recently at the Mixed Blood Theatre with The Good Thief.

A MAZE A dizzying, dazzling, heart-stopping work, A Maze interweaves the stories of some very unlikely partners. Come see a teenage girl with enigmatic intentions recreate herself after eight years of captivity, an artist gain a cult following for his 15,000-page comic book, and a pair of rock stars re-invent themselves after a hit song. It's a play that examines creativity, captivity, and what it means to be stuck in the middle. WHEN: Previews for A Maze are February 14th – 15th. Opens Sunday Feb 16th. Runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8PM, Sunday at 5PM through March 9th. WHERE: The Ashby Stage, 1901 Ashby Avenue, BerkeleyTICKET PRICES: February 14 and 15 are Pay-What-You-Can. Regular performance nights $20 - $25. Advance reservations strongly advised. For more information go to www.justtheater.org or call 510 214 3780 Just Theater partners with Shotgun Players to remount its hit production of Rob Handel’s A Maze, which ran July – August at Live Oak Theater. ” Now audiences who missed it the first time around will have that chance. At this center of this kaliedsiscopic play is Jessica, a famous kidnapping victim who has now become a national media sensation, and has to battle to control her own narrative as she puts the pieces of her life back together. This eerily timely storyline recalls the horrifying true-life incidents of Cleveland kidnapping victims and the Jaycee Dugard in Bay Area. The play also asks deep questions about the role of celebrity in our culture and whether, and whether great art can justify terrible behavior from the artist.

Aurora Theatre Company continues its 22nd season with the Bay Area Premiere of Johnna Adams’ (2011 Princess Grace Award recipient, finalist for the 2012 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize) incendiary new play GIDION’S KNOT. A parent/teacher conference begins with a concerned mother wanting answers as to why her son was suspended from his 5th grade class. Was he a bully? A victim? A protector? Their discussion develops into a dramatically charged, volatile exploration of personal responsibility, freedom of expression, the failure of our school system, bullying, and blame.Called “heart-stopping” by Washingtonian Magazine, this provocative exploration of culpability raises profound questions about parenting, maternal loyalty, and who is ultimately responsible for the actions of our children. Jon GIDION’S KNOT will be the fully-staged anchor production in this season’s Global Age Project, an Aurora Theatre Company initiative that encourages playwrights and directors to explore life in the 21st century and beyond. In addition, several new plays dealing with global age concerns will be chosen from an international pool of playwrights and presented in a series of developmental readings during the run of GIDION’S KNOT. A milestone of 20th century musical theater, The Threepenny Opera (Die Dreigroschenoper) rolls on unstoppably into the 21st with absolute relevance in today’s world. In their opera “by and for beggars,” composer Kurt Weill (1900–1950) and playwright Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956) created a trailblazing musical spectacle of fierce social and political critique, where the ‘haves’ clash with the ‘have-nots’ with its haunting jazz score by Kurt Weill, acid harmonies and biting lyrics. This musical saga of the villainous but irresistible Mack the Knife and his marauding band of thieves is a revolutionary musical theatre inspiring such hits as Cabaret (at The Stage in 2011 for an extended run) and Urinetown, The Musical (at The Stage in 2006 for an extended run). DIABLO THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS THE BELOVED ROMANTIC MUSICAL COMEDY GUYS AND DOLLS One of Broadway’s best musicals, Guys and Dolls comes to Walnut Creek for the Arts in Diablo Theatre Company’s exuberant production that captures the romance and humor of Damon Runyon’s Depression-era urban fables about fancy-talking gamblers and the “dolls” who love them.
