STEVEN EPP RETURNS TO BERKELEY REPERTORY THEATRE IN DARIO FO’S ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST
Christopher Bayes and Steven Epp reunite for a rollicking political farce
– Director Christopher Bayes and comic actor Steven Epp — the duo behind the uproarious A Doctor in Spite of Himself — return to Berkeley Repertory Theatre with Accidental Death of an Anarchist, the explosive political farce by Nobel Prize-winning Italian playwright Dario Fo. A Berkeley Rep favorite, Epp delighted audiences in Figaro and The Miser — now the master comedian returns in a criminally funny production about corruption. Only one man can cut through massive bureaucratic duplicity and reveal what happened to the suspected anarchist who died from a fall out of a fourth-floor police station window. Did he jump? Or was he pushed? In this contemporary take on a beloved classic, Berkeley Rep hauls you down to the station for a hilarious interrogation of our culture. This madcap comedy starts previews in the Roda Theatre on March 7, opens March 12, and runs through April 20.

“It’s a true pleasure to have Steve Epp and Christopher Bayes back at Berkeley Rep,” says Michael Leibert Artistic Director Tony Taccone. “Steve is one of the best comics in America and Christopher has done seminal work for us in the past. These are two guys who are at the top of their game. Accidental Death of an Anarchist is one of my favorite plays and I’m looking forward to presenting this work to Berkeley Rep audiences.”

“I’m thrilled to be back at Berkeley Rep with another biting comedy,” says Epp. “The genius of Accidental Death of an Anarchist is Dario Fo’s ability to take a harsh subject fresh out of the headlines and turn it into a raucous farce, exposing our dirty political underbelly, while keeping us laughing all at the same time. We had a blast playing it to audiences in New Haven and can’t wait to bring to Berkeley Rep’s adventurous audience.”
This production of Accidental Death of an Anarchist premiered at Yale Repertory Theatre in November and found acclaim with audiences and critics alike:

Shakespeare Play On Exceeds its Fundraising Goal SPO will produce a 2014 Summer Season

– Thanks to the passionate and dedicated response of our donors from Santa Cruz and beyond, Shakespeare Play On (SPO) is thrilled to announce that we will be producing a two-play Shakespeare season this summer, 2014. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of community support that helped us exceed our goal. The community response was so inspirational that several of donors were moved to give gifts that formed the nucleus of an endowment that will help ensure the longevity and fiscal health for future seasons. Co-Artistic Director Mike Ryan said, "When Shakespeare Santa Cruz (SSC) was closed at the end of the year, there was a prevailing feeling that the community had not been given a voice in its fate. The campaign of Shakespeare Play On has given them that voice, and their answer was definitive: this is a community that values the arts and one that wants its Shakespeare Festival. They have given us the means to bring it back to them, and we are extremely honored to be doing just that."
Ryan will act as Co-Artistic Director with former SSC Artistic Director, Marco Barricelli. Barricelli said of the campaign’s success, “I think the community in Santa Cruz has spoken loudly & clearly: they want their own professional Shakespeare company, producing quality plays. A Shakespeare summer theater has been part of these people’s lives since they were kids - and now they want that experience for their own kids. We are, indeed, like a phoenix and, thanks to this wonderful community, we will rise from the ashes and continue to bring stunning professional theatre to the area.” Ryan and Barricelli plan to announce the details of the coming season in early March.
As work begins for the 2014 summer season SPO is in negotiations with UC Santa Cruz to finalize terms for use of The Sinsheimer-Stanley Festival Glen. Designers, directors and actors are being hired for the summer. A core staff has been hired including the return of Aimee Zygmonski as the Managing Director, Jessica Bond as Production Manager, Lydia Bushfield as Marketing Manager and Maria Frangos as Company Manager/Education and Outreach.

23RD YEAR FOR STUDENT DAYS PROGRAM AT EUGENE O’NEILL’S TAO HOUSE IN DANVILLE

For more than two decades the Eugene O’Neill Foundation has welcomed students from Contra Costa and Alameda Counties to the Eugene O’Neill National Historic site for the Student Days program.
Each spring sixty to eighty high schools spend a day a Tao House getting to know more about America’s most notable playwright, and absorb the creative environment in which he worked. At the same time, students are given an immersion course in their area of creative endeavor – Writing, Drama, Art or Photography.
Applications are now being received for the March program. Students can download the application and program information from the O’Neill Foundation’s website: www.eugeneoneill.org. Click on “Student Days.” Deadline for applying will be in February. Applications can be submitted via email to taohouse@eugeneoneill.org. Upon acceptance to the program, students will be asked to submit a permission slip, and be given detailed instructions regarding pick-up and needed supplies.
Students focusing on Art and Drama will meet on Saturday March 8, and those interested in Writing and Photography will gather on Saturday, March 22. Students who benefit from active engagement in the artistic process with guidance and assistance from professionals are encouraged to apply. A short written application which outlines the student’s interest, ability and motivation is due February 22, 2014.
At each session students attend workshops led by practicing professionals in the chosen discipline. As students develop their own projects on site, the professionals are there as mentors to further student development. A special guided tour of provided by the National Park Service, and actors associated with Center Repertory Company in Walnut Creek provide scenes from O’Neill plays.
There is no cost to students for the day-long workshop. Transportation is provided by the National Park Service from Walnut Creek BART or downtown Danville. Snacks, beverages and lunch are provided for the day.
Student Days is presented by the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, and supported by funding from the Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation, and the Wood Foundation.

VERETSKI PASS WITH SF CHORAL ARTISTS PRESENTS LILITH, THE NIGHT DEMON IN ONE LEWD ACT Lecture Feb. 20 and three Performances May 1, 3, & 4
—The story of Lilith, the bawdy alternate Jewish story of creation, will be presented as a magical folk opera entitled Lilith, the Night Demon in One Lewd Act by the renowned instrumentalists Veretski Pass (Stuart Brotman, Joshua Horowitz and Cookie Segelstein) in collaboration with the San Francisco Choral Artists. Performances will be given at the Osher Marin JCC on May 1, at the JCC of the East Bay in Berkeley on May 3, and at Menlo-Atherton Performing Arts Center on May 4. Following each performance of the opera will be a traditional “klezmer dance party” with the music for which Veretski Pass is known. In addition, Joshua Horowitz and Veretski Pass will give a lecture demonstration on Thursday, February 20 at the Jewish Community Library in San Francisco.

The extraordinary and often bizarre score to Lilith, the Night Demon, composed by award-winning composer, Josh Horowitz, features both choral and instrumental ensembles. Michael Wex will appear as the narrator, with Heather Klein as Lilith and Anthony Russell as Adam. The often bawdy and humorous libretto draws on texts gleaned from Jewish superstitions, omens, dreams, and curses. Magen Solomon, artistic director of the Choral Artists, will conduct the chorus.

As any biblical scholar knows, the mysterious Lilith is not mentioned in Genesis. Her earliest appearance seems to have been in the Babylonian Talmud, with references from Mesopotamia and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Created out of dust at the same time as Adam, Lilith refused to be subservient and was forced to flee, becoming a demonic woman, a killer of children and seductress of young men.

The composition uses biblical, mystical, magical and structural elements from medieval works as well as from the Kamea (Heb. “amulet”), ritual objects in which charms against Lilith abound. The music weaves together ancient and modern motives and explores some of the lesser-known facets of Jewish mysticism and superstition, integrating them into a new composition that uses traditional East European Jewish music as well as modern compositional and improvisatory elements. A complete annotated, illustrated libretto by the artist Phil Blank will be made available at the concert.

Veretski Pass offers a unique and exciting combination of virtuosic musicianship and raw energy that has excited concertgoers across the world. The trio plays Old Country Music with origins in the Ottoman Empire, once fabled as the borderlands of the East and the West. In a true collage of Carpathian, Jewish, Rumanian and Ottoman styles, typical suites contain dances from Moldavia and Bessarabia; Jewish melodies from Poland and Rumania; Hutzul wedding music from Carpathian-Ruthenia; and haunting Rebetic aires from Smyrna, seamlessly integrated with original compositions. The trio’s CDs have repeatedly been on the 10-best recording lists of journalists. Veretski Pass takes its name from the mountain pass through which Magyar tribes crossed into the Carpathian basin to settle what later became the Austro-Hungarian Empire.\\
