I liked "Sonya,Vonya" more than the reviewer, but it's nice to read a well written dissent. Perhaps the problem is expectations: this is a funny, but flimsy, show. Like most of Durang's stuff. Hard to imagine that it won a Tony.

Definetly agree about Kirsten Nielsen. Terribly mannered and not all that funny. Doesn't hold a candle to other, older funny ladies: Madeline Kahn, Terri Garr, Dyan Cannon.

Perhaps they should have imported Anthony Fusco and Sharon Lockwood as Vanya and Sonia from the Berkeley Rep production. I would love to see Christine.

Not in the least. Just that it was nice that the reviewer didn't buckle under to conventional wisdom -- it won a Tony, it must be good -- and, instead, shared his conflicted feelings. I'm sure he's not the only audience member who'll walk away thinking "what was all the hoopla about?" As I stated, I liked it more than he did, but it's not much of a play. The critics have been very generous to it. And I'm not implying that.
