Today daughter Rebecca and I caught the final performance of Theatre West's BY JUPITER, their fourth annual staged reading of a musical comedy to benefit the Betty Garrett Musical Comedy workshop. A good time was had by all, though this battle of the sexes bout did show its age (1942, Rodgers and Hart's final show). Some aspects undoubtedly resonated differently during the war, especially the Amazons' song about "The Boy I Left Behind Me." Kudos to comic Nick Santa Maria in the lead role oriiginated by Ray Bolger. If he mugged any harder, he'd get arrested. M.D. Brian O'Halloran provided accompaniment on one of the songwriters' weaker scores, though "Nobody's Heart" is still sweet. I was amused at the depiction of Hercules as a coward, and wondered how that played in the original, since Bolger had recently done a major film opposite a famous coward. The other amusing thing happened in the lobby, before the house opened. Rebecca nudged me and said, "That guy over there is reading your book!" Talk about your niche audiences! ;) Laura
