We didn't know what to expect, but we were blown away by Yellow. Certainly the best production I've seen at NCTC, the cast was uniformly excellent, the set was masterful - it was simply a great production.

Acting was fine, but the play wasn't a gay play. Just because you have one flamboyant stereotypical gay as a rather minor character does not make it a gay play. And all that bible thumping crap is just annoying. The guys behind me left at intermission and they missed nothing in the second act. This play really revolved around the two parents and their relationship--at least they only made out on stage in the beginning, I was afraid I'd be witnessing another hetero sex capade that doesn't belong at nctc.

Spoiler

I was actually suspecting that the brother had slept with the bible thumper so the gay could be a half, brother donor. At least the author didn't go down that cliche path.

Does it have to be a "gay play?"

And I would argue it very much was a "gay play". The play was about a family that goes through hardship, but also, grows, in size, in the process.

I would agree if the gay best friend was just a character that passes through, but his journey, as well as the family taking him in, makes the play also about alternative families - very much on mission for NCTC.

I truly don't think every gay play has to only be about gay people, or even only have gay people as the central stories.

And especially if the audiences for those plays is going to grow, it should be about experiences that reflect or relate to the gay community, through any lens.

It's also "on mission" for NCTC because the playwright is gay, as well.

Absolutely. And I welcome the days we're in now, where a gay theatre can present stories that speak to a wide array of issues, audiences, and lifetyles, with an eye toward social justice - not simply gay ghetto plays.
