What we could see, when the set malfunctioned, is that they have a black drop that is split in two horizontally, which rises/drops very quickly from below/above the stage. During the scene changes, they have dim lighting to get everyone/thing in place.

We couldn't see the cube itself (at least from where I was - just the bottoms of feet a few times), but it was apparent at times that the side walls were shaking (they are soft), so presumably they are on the same fast rising mechanism as the blacks.
