Producers know that without the "don't leave singles" rule turned on (it can be turned off) they end up with an inordinate amount of singles throughout the theater. Singles are usually difficult to sell and many patrons know this so they intentionally skip a seat hoping that the seat next to them goes empty. Even if patrons don't know that singles are hard to sell they tend to leave a seat between them and the currently purchased tickets just naturally (in a movie theater people usually leave a seat or two between them and the next couple). So can you imagine how many singles would be scattered throughout the theater if there wasn't a rule?? But it does irritate me if there are three tickets and I want to buy one ticket and leave an even easier to sell pair as a set of three isn't a quick seller either. I'd be doing the producers a favor!!
