The specific Tony rule governing this situation did not exist until the 2002/2003 season, after Fortune's Fool a play by Ivan Turgenev (who had been dead for well over 100 years) was nominated for Best Play. Since then, the Tony Administration Committee has been remarkably consistent in judging works that have been in the popular repertoire to be revivals, regardless of whether or not they had been seen on Broadway.
