Last week, ended Sunday, saw box office grosses totaling $21,278,718 for 28 Broadway shows. Grosses were up by 15.28% from the prior week; and the average price paid per ticket was up by $6.38 to $94.46. All shows except two (“No Man’s Land/Godot” & “Outside Mullingar”) increased. Three shows were at 100% capacity, the usual at “The Book of Mormon,” plus newcomers “A Raisin in the Sun” (1 preview) and “Aladdin” (6 previews).
The revival of “A Raisin in the Sun,” starring Denzel Washington, played only one preview last week at the Barrymore Theatre but that one show grossed $151,179. Thanks to premium seat sales, that was over its potential gross at 116.52%. The average ticket price was a very high $144.53.
“If/Then” had a very good first week of previews with 7 performances. The grosses were $909,159, almost 83% of potential at a good average ticket price of $106.93.
Likewise, “Les Misérables,” also for 7 previews. Gross: $964,004 which is 81.43% of potential at an average ticket price of $103.81.
Meanwhile, “Aladdin” filled 100% of its seats but at preview discount prices. Gross: $826,491 for 6 performances.
As for that other big musical in previews, “Rocky,” things were not so rosy. The show grossed $635,153 for a full week of 8 previews which was 43.65% of its potential gross of $1,454,942. The average ticket price was a low $66.29.
“The Bridges of Madison County” had its best week to date, grossing $476,005. However, that is just 46.54% of potential gross. The average ticket price was $72.98, up almost $10 from the prior week.
