That's interesting. I hadn't really thought that's what they'd decided. If they have, I wish they'd explicitly say so.
I'm not necessarily looking for Off-Center to be the musicals equivalent of The Mint any more than I'm looking for the main Encores! series to be the musicals equivalent of The Mint. I've often reminded people here (and elsewhere) that Encores! never claimed to be devoted to producing the obscure. But at least one somewhat more obscure or older show each season would be nice. (I realize that The Cradle Will Rock counts as older, but it doesn't count as Off-Broadway.)
Seven or eight years ago, NYTW announced that it would be starting an Encores!-like series devoted to Off-Broadway but then NYTW had its financial problems.
The problem is now that this Encores! is doing this, no one else will do it. But Encores! isn't really doing it.
I wish they would just take out any reference to it being an Off-Broadway series and instead define it as a series in which they do shows, including some Off-Broadway shows, that are not suitable for the main series.
