I saw the 1974 tour and yes, Barry Williams really did play Pippin. I didn't have much to compare him to at the time but remember being surprised that he really did a good job. I found a few reviews online and apparently he really was ok. They did some very short runs-where I saw Pippin they only played one matinee and one evening performance.

There was also a tour in the mid 1980s that I saw in Dallas. Ben Vereen both directed and was the Leading Player. Other than enjoying his performance, I remember thinking that it was dull and slow and not nearly as much fun as what I remembered from the 1974 tour.
