Question about variation in tour markets

How much of it is just determined by local population size (so that, say, any place with a population size similar to the Pittsburgh metropolitan area's 2.7 million would only support one week)

vs.

how much of it varies depending on a specific population's tendency toward theatregoing (if, say, Metropolitan Area A could only support one week, but Metropolitan Area B of the same population could support three or four weeks because there's apparently much higher interest in theatregoing among them than the people who live in A)?

I don't know if I worded this clearly. But I would love to hear more about this from anybody!
