I'm actually not surprised ROCKY is shaping up to be a hit. Not because the size of the production nor the involvement of a bonafide Hollywood legend. But the film on which the musical is based is actually a very underrated piece. Sure it won the Oscar but because it yielded many sequels and its best remembered only for the fight sequences, people forget that the film ROCKY is a simple love story about two quirky people. It's ONCE with boxing gloves. I do recommend that people rent the film and watch it again and they'll be surprised to see that the majority of the film isn't about boxing but about characterization. I can easily see how the story was thought to be ripe for musicalization. I haven't seen the show yet but I hope the sweet core of the film is retained and that it too isn't remembered solely for the finale, memorable as it is on film.
