Maybe because most people don't care about that level of sound quality, and you can't carry your turntable around with you.

True, which is why I bought an ION turntable that plugs into my computer. It adds music from old records onto iTunes, from which I can burn a CD or play the music on my iPhone.

True, the sound quality is that of an old beloved record, scratches and all, but that's fine with me. I just like the convenience. (And if I were more ambitious, there is software available that can clean up the sound.)
