i just don't think people pick shows on price - dramedy 03:46 pm EDT 03/11/14 |

i agree about the people walking into the box-office, but i mean what about ads targeting folks ... ok, i'll just risk starting a bridge and tunnel fight here but that's not the point - ok here goes: let's say there's a blue collar guy living in queens with his family. he's not going to spring for a play at broadway prices. it's not even on his radar. but he'd like to take his family to the theater. suddenly he sees ROCKY FOR 76 BUCKS. those two things are going to jump out at him. ROCKY? you bet? 76 bucks? ok. he'd be willing to swing that. take his family to the theater.
i swear i think this would work.
i think it would work for other titles as well - for an additional two or three months at the end of a run. that's a big deal. i may not have stressed enough in my original post but this is only for the end of a run. even a successful run.
if you're selling your tickets for 75 bucks - you don't need to be offering discounts and you don't need to be selling them any longer at tkts either.
a huge part of this is just marketing. with discounts some tickets have been sold for 80 bucks or so anyway. but those were mezz/balcony seats. orchestra seats? folks would snap them up. they'd take chances on shows with lukewarm reviews and they'd go back and see stuff they liked. at least i would.
i'll admit. i'm a seat snob. i will wait on a decent orchestra seat even if it means missing the show - unless it is something i really, really, want to see. i don't like being that far removed and besides, i've spent my fair share of time in the balcony and hated every minute of it.
there are so many things i would see repeatedly if the cost for an orchestra seat wasn't so prohibitive. i don't think i'm the only one.
