I think you've hit on why the show doesn't work--or what I felt was its biggest weakness. It's an intimate show essentially (except the final fight) but trapped in the workings of a "big Broadway musical". I found the lead actors VERY good, very touching, and I liked their story. But it seemed at odds with the massive production floating around it. I kept waiting for something to "happen", for something to endanger his training or participation in the fight, for something to endanger his love. But everything seemed pretty much smooth sailing, other than the very intimate and non showy conflict he has with himself--to show and up go the distance. The biggest conflict of the evening seemed to be Adrian telling off her brother. This is all fine, but it's not being done as a character chamber piece, so I think people (I did) will have the expectation for something grander (from the story). So while the end was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in the theatre, most of what led up to it was, for me, a bit dull and lacking in tension and drama.
