I think Alan Menken was a reasonable guess. He was 11 when Hammerstein died, but if he was 19 when Hammerstein died, he could have been a protege, and Menken has won at least one Oscar, Grammy, and Tony. It's not that far off. (John Williams, on the other hand...)

I also don't think someone needs to turn in their musical theater card if they didn't know that Sondheim was a protege of Hammerstein.
