More shows about boxing...

Well, Sammy Davis Jr. in GOLDEN BOY racked up a Tony nom for Best Musical and over 500 performances. Muhammad Ali in BUCK WHITE lasted only a week. THE BODY BEAUTIFUL didn't play long, either.

But Hammerstein's CARMEN JONES changed the bullfighter to a boxer, and was a hit.

Certainly, there are more plays about boxing than musicals, including the original for GOLDEN BOY and THE GREAT WHITE HOPE. Buster Keaton's well-known silent film BATTLING BUTLER, was, in fact, based on a stage play, BATTLING BUTTLER, that ran for over 300 performances in 1924--a huge run then. Rod Serling's brilliant teleplay REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT, flopped when adapted for Broadway, but I think the original is equal to Willy Loman's tragic tale.

I'm sure there are more, but I'm tired.
