i think it would work better as musical. i don't want to see that either but at least with songs you could work more of the narrative and more description in. on stage it will either have to be included as added dialogue which would be awkward and forced or some kind of internal monologue narration which would be worse.

again, i cannot stress enough this is something i don't want to see either.

the problem is the magic of confederacy is in the writing. the plot doesn't have the same kind of brilliance nor is there any kind of intricacy or complexity to it.

gone with the wind it is not.

also, keep in mind this is the kind of book that has a rabid, let me stress, rabid following. the howls if ... more likely when ... they get it wrong will be deafening.
