I think it may be less about whether boxing is a good subject for theatre (Joyce Carol Oates might argue that it IS theatre, as might Hemingway and Mailer), but this story really is about these two "little" people--it's more reminiscent of "Marty" (which began on TV and then became a film--I know there was a musical in development, perhaps with John C. Reilly?), where the two lonely folk need an in intimate space (even a film screen can frame their intimacy). I only saw the first "Rocky" movie and was (surprisingly) touched by it--it seemed as if the sequels became more about the boxing matches and, while I found that part interesting in the first film, once Rocky and Adrian got together, I didn't need to know what else happened to them.
