In a crazy 1966 New York Times interview with Rex Reed, she said that while she was in A Thousand Clowns she signed a contract with Seven Arts for $15,000 a picture. "It sounded like a lousy deal, but I had an agent who said, 'Honey, you better grab it,' so I did. They never offered me a film but they won't let me out of that stupid contract."

She went on to say that Seven Arts got paid a lot of money to let her do Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? but that the film version she did of the Actors Studio production of The Three Sisters was sitting unreleased because of Seven Arts (and to the consternation of the Studio, which had made it in hopes of making some money).

She didn't discuss the Thousand Clowns film directly in the interview, but I'd guess the Seven Arts contract was the reason. Clearly the film was done on a tight budget.
