BEAUTIFUL is Beautiful

Posted by: NewtonUK 08:48 am EDT 03/12/14

Beautiful is a lovely show, beautifully directed by Marc Bruni, and choreographed by Josh Prince. The cast is uniformly strong, with Jessie Mueller giving a break out star making performance.

The book isnt deep, but its well written - the dialogue doesnt make one cringe as at so many contemp musicals - and the jokes actually get laughs.

Is it great art? No. A lovely night at the theatre> Yes ---

Except for the fact that this aud for this show seems to talk constantly during it, and women of a certain age sing along.

Heads up re TKTS tickets. Last night my TKTS purchase was 2nd row center mezz - best seat in house.

Although the show is selling well, perhaps week night TKTS buys are the unsold premium seats!

When I went there were a bunch of drunk women in front of me hooting and singing the whole time. I frankly wasn't taken with the show-the book was awful. It was like someone didn't know how to edit. (The scenes feel half baked to me-like they stop too soon or when the action is about to happen so another song can be added.)

is one of the most embarrassingly bad musical books I've ever come across.

I agree, the show is lovely. I saw the show on New Year's Day and the only sound in the orchestra was an audience member crinkling some sort of bag through one of the quiet music numbers. The sequences of the creation of songs are so entertaining and fun.

I want to go back but I do not want to sit with talking patrons who sing along, too.
