I agree, especially since Eliza makes the point in the second act (and I'm paraphrasing from memory) that she "sold flowers, not myself and now, thanks to you, I'm not fit to sell anything else." Eliza is not ashamed of having been a flower seller, but feels that she has to make the point that, while she was a poor, working class girl, she never slipped so low as to be a prostitute. Vivian, on the other hand, IS a prostitute and, while she dreams of better things, she isn't ashamed of being what she is...until Edward "outs" her to his buddy and the guy ends up verbally and physically attacking her. The classic musical that would be a better fit as a comparison to PRETTY WOMAN would probably be SWEET CHARITY.
