Sitting in the orchestra pit with JRB for Bridges

Posted by: Maverick2884 03:27 pm EDT 03/12/14

Just saw on a friend's facebook page that TodayTix and Bridges of Madison County are doing a giveaway where the winner gets to sit in the orchestra pit while JRB conducts Bridges (and winner gets a signed CD). They also have links to a bunch of the songs from Bridges--has this been released yet?

Does anyone know how often JRB actually conducts the show? When I saw it, I'm pretty sure he wasn't conducting...

for those of you interested, link below...

sitting for 2.5 hours watching him conduct and not see the action on stage. maybe there is a monitor, but still, a meet and greet before or after the show would be far more interesting.

JRB conducted the band for the ill-fated URBAN COWBOY, which featured some songs written by him, as well as songs written by many others. The band was situated on stage, so the audience had a full view of JRB doing his thing.

I must say that watching him conduct was far more interesting than anything else happening on that stage.

Matt cavenaugh was the most interesting thing to watch in urban cowboy.

Different strokes...if Cavenaugh was going to be that bland and give that dull a performance, they really needed to get him out of his shirt more. And a shirtless Cavenaugh WAS the show's big marketing hook, after all.

I actually like Matt Cavenaugh and thought he was terrific in GREY GARDENS and A CATERED AFFAIR, but he was sort of a black hole at the center of URBAN COWBOY.

Actually, Jenn Colella was very good in the female lead and I think that was the first time I saw her. I kept wondering what she saw in Cavenaugh's character...she could have done so much better.

Oh, and, upon reflection, it's always great to see Sally Mayes and she had one good number.

But the presence of JRB conducting the band was the most entertaining and lasting part of the whole experience.

Flea Market - Phantom

For several years, at the Broadway Cares Flea Market Grand Auction, there is an item which is sitting in the orchestra pit for a performance of Phantom of the Opera and conducting the exit music. It's not exactly the same thing, but it usually goes for around $800 - $1200. So I think there is a market for this type of experience.

Watching him conduct is beside the point: if you have never sat in a pit for a show, it is a rare and special privilege. Trust me, sitting in the house you have no idea of the amount of music that is being made by the hard-working musicians down in the depths. I realize that, for most people, it does not substitute for seeing the show from out front, but it is a wonderful and truly educational complement to the stage production for any lover of musical theater.

i think it would make an interesting fund raising offering. that would make a little more sense to me than a giveaway.

I think for the right person it could be very interesting. As a person who is a fan of JRB, plays an instrument, has always been interested in orchestrations and orchestras, and most importantly has already seen the show once and liked it, I would LOVE to sit in the orchestra and revisit it that way. I do, however, agree that as a first/only time experiencing a Broadway show, I would not want to sit in the pit. I think this is for a certain type of fan.

I'd have to agree. I'm a musician but I'd rather watch from the wings.

You know, some people care about what happens in a Broadway pit and would jump at the chance to experience a show from there. Just because you're not interested doesn't mean that others aren't.

Certainly playing in a high school pit would not potentially be anything like getting to watch professionals at work. But if you don't think you could find anything exciting or edifying in the experience, that's fine.

Hey - I'm sure some people would love to be backstage during a show so they could see what that would is like, whether they have a practical interest in stagecraft or not. Or to sit with the sound engineer, or the lighting board op, etc. Who's to say people might not be curious enough about what being in the orchestra pit during a professional show is really about? No, not everyone would be, sure. But I think it's a cool idea to invite someone in to that world for an evening - and I'm not saying that just because I'm a musician. ;-)

I'd rather give the chance to aspiring musicians, conductors, and/or orchestrators who would find the experience interesting and beneficial.
