Encores! seems to be trying to get high-powered (at least in musical-theatre terms) casts for these shows. I think that's what is selling the series (to whatever degree it is selling). If they'd done a run of five performances for Violet with some talented unknown, it wouldn't have sold a whole lot. One night with Sutton Foster sold.
I don't know how well the shows sold last summer, except for Violet.
But if you got the kind of established talent whom they cast (and then mostly misused) in Cradle Will Rock in almost anything, then they'd probably get around the same-size audiences they got for that. Cradle is a famous title, but it's never been a terribly popular one. Actually, something like Promenade, with the right cast, might do a bit better because Cradle had been seen several times in New York even in just the few years before Off-Center.
I think everyone, including the City Center people, knows that doing Off-Broadway shows there is not ideal. That's why it would be nice if a company with more money than York but a smaller space than City Center would do an Off-Broadway series, as NYTW was planning.
