It's all about the staging... it is pretty wild ( and hadn't been in the mezz of the Wintergarden ever and it's great for this... but not on the extreme sides ).
Getting part of the audience onto the stage for the boxing match is SLOW going. A big cheat is all the projected film footage.
Not a good musical at all but the tourists will eat this up... especially families!

I wonder how much "Rocky" is paying for insurance!

The Rocky movie franchise died, of old age and overexposure, in 1990. Are millions of small children in 2014 going to be begging their parents to be taken to see Rocky the Musical? Maybe, but somehow, I'm not seeing it.

Meanwhile, are people my age (I was in my mid-twenties when the first Rocky movie came out) going to be beating down the box office doors for tickets to the musical? Again, somehow I'm not seeing it. Just because a movie has a famous and familiar title doesn't necessarily mean that anyone is dying to see it as a Broadway musical--as Ghost, Rebecca, and for that matter The Bridges of Madison County, have recently pointed out, again.

In all fairness, the final (?) chapter of the Rocky saga on film, Rocky Balboa was a modest hit in 2006.

Right you are. Even as I was writing, I vaguely recalled that there might have been another one after 1990. But I didn't think it had made enough of a cultural splash to bother to go look it up.

I think there's a Rocky marathon on AMC right now, if you want to see the later ones

Though I don't know why you would.

Thanks, Ann. I happened to notice that on my Comcast "Guide" yesterday--but I passed! I wasn't ever all that much in love with the first Rocky movie, and my understanding about the others was that basically they just kept remaking and remaking the first one.
